Why download video

Watch offline — on a plane, on a train, at a cabin with no internet. Save a tutorial, lecture, recipe or your own clip before it's gone.

Why not an online service

No ad-filled downloader sites with limits. Vidak runs on your computer, sends nothing anywhere and asks for no account.

What it costs

Nothing. No paid tiers, subscriptions, watermarks or caps on how much you download.

01What Vidak can do

Nothing extra — just what you actually need to download a video to your computer.

▶

Where you can download from

YouTube — regular videos, Shorts, live streams, youtu.be and YouTube Music links. VK — videos and clips, including vkvideo.ru. Rutube — videos and shorts. Vimeo — clips from the page and the player.

You need a link to a specific video — just copy it from your browser's address bar.

4K

Quality of your choice

Ready-made presets: 4K, Full HD, HD and SD. Each shows an approximate file size, so there are no surprises after the download.

♪

Download music as MP3

The "Audio" tab saves the sound track as MP3 instead of the video. That's how people grab music, podcasts and lectures from YouTube.

H.264

H.264 or AV1 codec

H.264 plays everywhere, even on old players and TVs. AV1 makes a smaller file at the same quality.

CC

Subtitles

One checkbox and subtitles are saved next to the video — Russian, English, both languages, or every available one.

≡

Batch links & queue

Paste twenty links at once: the first downloads with your settings, the rest line up in a queue and go one after another.

⧉

Whole playlists

If the link contains a playlist, a "Whole playlist" checkbox appears. Without it only a single video is saved — you won't grab a hundred clips by accident.

⏸

Pause & resume

Pause a download and continue from the same spot. Even if you closed the app, it offers to finish the download on the next launch.

⇱

Drag-and-drop & clipboard

Drag a link straight into the window, or turn on the clipboard hint — the app notices the address you just copied.

⟳

Download history

A list of everything you've saved at the bottom of the window: open the file, open the folder, or jump back to the source video in one click.

🍪

Cookies for private videos

Video needs a sign-in or is 18+? Connect your browser's cookies or a cookies.txt file and the download runs as you.

⇄

Proxy

Video blocked in your region — set an HTTP, HTTPS or SOCKS5 proxy in the settings and Vidak goes through it.

02How to download a video, step by step

Five steps from a link to a finished file — the same for YouTube, VK, Rutube and Vimeo. A one-minute read.

  1. 01

    Install Vidak

Download the installer and run it. Windows may show a "SmartScreen" prompt — click "More info" → "Run anyway": that happens with every new app that doesn't have an expensive signature. After installation Vidak opens as a single window — nothing else to set up.

  2. 02

Find the video by its link

Copy the video address in your browser (the address bar or the "Share" → "Copy link" button), paste it into Vidak's field and click Find. You can also just drag the link into the app window with your mouse.

In a couple of seconds a card appears: thumbnail, title, channel, length. That means the video is found and ready to download. The Batch button turns the field into a box for several links — one per line.

  3. 03

    Pick quality or MP3

The Video tab — quality from SD to 4K (the "opt." mark is a sensible default). The Audio tab — save just the sound as MP3. Below you can switch the codec and tick Subtitles.

Only the qualities this video actually has are shown. The size under each card is approximate; the final file may differ by 5–10%.

  4. 04

Choose a folder and click Download

Pick where to save. To avoid choosing every time, set a default folder: the gear in the top-right corner → "Default folder". Then you'll see the percentage, speed and time left; a download can be paused or cancelled.

At the end the status changes to "processing" — that's normal: the app merges video and audio into one file. On large clips it takes from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, and the bar "breathes" meanwhile.

  5. 05

    Open the downloaded video

Done — click Open file to play it in your player, or Open folder. Everything you download stays in the history at the bottom of the window: the file opens from there in one click too.

If the file won't open or plays without a picture — download that video again with the H.264 codec, or install the VLC or MPC-HC player, they read any format.

Several videos at once

While a download is running, the button changes to "Queue" — paste new links and they'll download in turn with the default settings. A default folder is required for the queue.

Speed

Settings has "Parallel download". On a fast connection set it to 8 or 16 — it gets noticeably quicker. If your network is weak and keeps dropping, go back to 1–2.

Updating the engine

The "Update yt-dlp" button at the top of the window. Press it first if a video suddenly stops downloading — 8 times out of 10 it fixes the problem.

What you may download

Only download what you have the right to: your own clips, material with the author's permission, or content available under a license. You are responsible for how you use the files.

03If a video won't download

Common errors and hiccups when downloading video — and what to do about them. Click a question to expand the answer.

"Invalid link" — the app won't accept the address

Vidak works with links to a specific video: YouTube (regular video, Shorts, live stream, youtu.be, music.youtube.com), Vimeo, Rutube and VK Video.

Links to a channel, search results, a home page or shorteners like bit.ly won't work. Open the video itself and copy the address from the address bar.

"Confirm you're not a bot" or a sign-in is required

YouTube sometimes asks you to log in. The fix is to hand the app the cookies of a browser you're already signed in to:

  1. In the top-right corner pick your browser from the "No cookies" list (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi).
  2. Fully close that browser — while it's running, Windows may refuse to release the cookies file.
  3. Click "Find" again.

If that didn't help, install the "Get cookies.txt LOCALLY" browser extension, save a cookies.txt file and connect it with the "cookies.txt" button next to the browser list.

"Private video" or "Members-only video"

A video like this is available only to people with access or a paid membership. Connect the cookies of the browser signed in to the right account. If you don't have access, it can't be downloaded.

"Video is DRM-protected"

This is paid or premium content with technical protection (movies, some stream recordings). Such streams can't be downloaded by any tool — it's a limitation of the platform itself, not the app.

"Video unavailable" or "restricted in your region"

Unavailable — the clip was deleted, hidden by the author or blocked. Check whether it opens in a browser.

Region-restricted — turn on a VPN, or set a proxy in the settings (gear → "Proxy"), for example socks5://127.0.0.1:1080.

"Premiere / live stream hasn't started yet"

The video doesn't exist as a file yet. Wait for the broadcast to start — better still, to end: then the whole recording downloads.

A video stopped downloading altogether, though it used to work

Platforms change their protection regularly. What to do:

  1. Click Update yt-dlp at the top of the window and try again.
  2. Connect your browser's cookies.
  3. Go to vidak.app and download the latest version of the app.
"yt-dlp not found" — a red bar on launch

Most often an antivirus deleted the file: it sometimes treats the download engine as suspicious. Click the Download yt-dlp button right in that message — the app fetches the official version and verifies its checksum. If the antivirus removes it again, add Vidak's folder to the exclusions.

"ffmpeg not found" — high quality and MP3 won't download

ffmpeg merges video with audio and makes MP3. Reinstall the app — the file comes back. If you already have ffmpeg installed separately, point to ffmpeg.exe in the settings.

A download is "stuck" at 100% or on "processing"

That's the final stage: video and audio are being combined into one file. For 4K and long clips it can run for several minutes and load the CPU noticeably. Wait — no progress is lost.

It downloads slowly

Raise "Parallel download" in the settings to 8–16. Remember the platform limits speed too: a 3 GB 4K file physically can't arrive in a minute.

"Another download is already running"

Vidak downloads one file at a time so it doesn't split the bandwidth. Just add new links — they'll queue up and start automatically. Or cancel the current download.

"Queue paused: choose a default folder"

Videos from the queue download without asking, so the app needs to know in advance where to put them. Open the settings, set a "Default folder", then click "Start".

The file downloaded but won't open, or has no sound

Most likely the player doesn't understand the codec. Download the video again choosing H.264, or install VLC — it opens everything.

None of the above helped

Open the settings → "Show logs": the exact reason for the failure is there. The "Open logs folder" button next to it — you can attach that file to a support email.
